Simple DIY yoga mat bag

July 30, 2009

Demonstration of how to fold a piece of fabric around your yoga mat to make a handy carrying bag. All you need is your mat and a rectangular piece of non-slippery fabric. I used a 24”x64” piece of an old cotton bed sheet. Other sizes might work just as well, as long as there’s enough coverage so your mat doesn’t fall out.
Steps:
1. lay your fabric out on the floor and place your mat diagonally across the center.
2. the ends of your mat are now pointing at two of the rectangle’s corners. fold these corners in over the mat so they are touching at its center.
3. take the remaining, longer corners of the fabric, lift them up and bring them across to the opposite side of the mat. the corners should end up pointing away from the mat in opposite directions.
4. flip everything over, and bring lift the loose ends up so they are coming across the mat to touch one another.
5. you may want to tie knots in the fabric of the loose ends near the mat, to make your strap thinner instead of like a sling.
6. tie the loose ends of fabric together in a knot as close to the ends (away from the base) as possible. this forms the “strap” that you hang over your shoulder.
7. experiment with which side of your “bag” is up or down. sometimes bringing the strap over the top of the mat and down onto the other side will make it more stable; sometimes it will cause everything to unravel. you may also want to experiment with tying knots at various points to make things more stable.
