Yoga for Beginners – How to Prepare For Your First Class

Yoga is great for beginners who are looking for something different to try. It is also available everywhere these days.  But where do you start and how do you prepare yourself?  Well the first thing to do is assess you health condition and physical capabilities.  If you are in good health with no injuries, you are off to a great start.  The next step is locating somewhere in your area with great Yoga instructors and classes and that offer Yoga for beginners.  Yoga is a science of the body and mind and is something you want to take slowly and explore all that it can do for you.

Beginning yoga is mostly centered around learning the basic breathing techniques and poses.  There are over 100 Yoga poses!By learning which Yoga style you enjoy the most you can advance to a lever that produces the best results.  But you must start with the basics and master those before you can move on.  Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga styles are popular for beginners.  Hatha Yoga works on strength and stamina while Vinyasa is by its very meaning, breath synchronized movement. 

Vinyasa teaches you to inhale or exhale when moving from one pose to another.The Cat Cow Stretch and the Sun Salutation are two of the easier and more common poses for beginners.You can search for classes in your area by using the Internet or your local newspaper.Be sure to check out instructor credentials before signing up for their class.Most facilities that have Yoga studios will have Yoga mats that you will be able to use.Use the ones provided with the class until you are sure which you prefer.Yoga pants are very popular right now and can be found at most athletic stores but as long as they are comfortable and stretchy, sweat pants are completely acceptable.  You will usually be barefoot so footwear is not important.Wearing a supportive top is a good idea.  Secure hair out of your face so that you can maintain poses without hair tickling your face.

Other things to keep in mind when considering Yoga for beginners is to eat lightly a few hours before class, bring water for before or after class, but don’t drink water during class and let your teacher know it is your first class so they can help you if needed.Another idea is to check out your local book store or online for some of the beginner poses so you can have idea on what they look like. You could even go ahead and try some out. Just don’t forget to stretch.Try to get to class a little early to ensure a good spot towards the front so you will have a good view of whats going on.  Choose a location that feels comfortable to you.  Relax on your mat and get comfortable in the room.  After that, let the instructor take you on your first journey!
