Will a foam yoga mat not slip around on wooden floors or will i need rubber for that? thanks.?

August 15, 2010

It depends if the wooden floor is polished or not. If it is not polished than the foam mat should be fine, however if the floor is polished I would suggest a rubber one. Rubber mats also tend to keep in better condition for longer too.

What Type of Yoga Mat Should I Buy?

May 22, 2010

I shall be taking a course in Yoga next semester, where I shall practice it for about two hours a week for 14 weeks (at least). I did some research, and heard that natural rubber yoga mats are the best, and to make sure they were easily cleanable. But I couldn’t find any more than that.

I am 5′11" and 150 lbs.

Are natural rubber mats really the best?
How thick should the mat be?
How long/wide should the mat be?
Is there anything else I should know about yoga mats?

Thanks

Hey there,

Purchasing a yoga mat is based a lot on your own personal preference and needs.
Things to consider are how often you will be using it, where, for what type of class and any other special needs/preferences eg. extra long mat. If you are going to be transporting it a lot, go for a lighter mat and find a basic strap to carry it with.

Most mats are about 3-4 mm in thickness, which tends to be ideal. Thicker than this is great if you have an injury and require additional cushioning. However, with more cushioning you lose stability, so there is a playoff between the two. There are mats that have extra length for taller yogis. Most mats average about 6 feet however there are some that are 7 feet in length.

Personally, I haven’t found that natural rubber mats are better than mats made of synthetic polymers, but is more of a personal preference and how you like the feel of them. Some synthetic ones do have advantages with special technology used to create more grip with for example.

Cleaning your mat is easy and you can even create your own yoga mat cleaner using a spray bottle filled with water and a few drops of tea tree oil. Give your mat a light spray and a rub down with a towel, then let dry before rolling up. The tea tree oil, besides having a nice scent, is naturally antibacterial.

Hope this helps,
Jenna

What accessories do I need for EA Sports Active Wii? Does it use a yoga mat or exercise ball?

January 12, 2010

I was thinking about buying EA sports active for the nintendo wii but what accessories do I need? It comes with the leg strap and rubber band but does it make use of a exercise ball or yoga matt? Any suggestions?

Every Nintendo Wii game tells you what accessories you need for it on the back, usually top right.

jump rope surfaces?

September 23, 2009

ive heard that concrete is bad for ankles/knees/feet, so ive been using a thin rubber yoga mat over concrete then a rug over the yoga mat. Will that work?

Yes that really should be much better for your joints then jumping on plain concrete..

Yoga mats that don’t peel?

September 09, 2009

Has anyone found a yoga mat (just a standard one, not for Bikram or hot yoga) that has a surface that won’t peel? I have a Gaiam mat that has (I think) rubber blended with jute and it peels and flakes all over. Any great alternatives?
I’d like to stick to natural fibers, too. Natural rubber, perhaps jute or hemp. (At least PVC-free and/or recyclable/biodegradable materials.) Any suggestions?

Try the GoFit Yoga mat. You can get it at Target for under $20. I personally use the GoFit and have had no peeling problems at all. Plus it is thicker than a standard yoga mat so it has more comfort. Good luck!

Where can I buy that neoprene or foam rubber padding? Like the kind they put on jet ski's where your feet go?

June 24, 2009

I have an old jet ski, '91 kawasaki js 650, and I need to replace the foot padding. Its just some pretty basic black, foam rubber type stuff, about 1/4 inch thick. I've checked at jet ski stores but they either don't have it, or it has a pretty high price tag, like $70.

I want to just find a roll of it somewhere cheap and cut it to size (since I also want to use it for another project).

However I've checked every hardware store in town, as well as boaters world, none of them have anything close. The closest thing I've been able to find is a yoga mat from wal mart, but its really not ideal.

Does anyone have any idea where I can get a roll of this, or something pretty comparable. (black, about 1/4 inch thick, durable foam rubber). I'd prefer to find it at an actual store so I can feel it before I buy, but if not I'd buy it online too.

Thanks.

You should try a A/c shop or possibly a plumbing shop as the insulation for ducts and pipes is much the same. You would be looking for the sheet stuff as opposed to reg pipe insulation. I am NOT referring to the stuff available at DIY home centers(They make great noodles though) This is commercial grade and heavy duty. I have had to insulate tanks with the stuff as well as appurtenances with-in a piping system

yoga tips

June 22, 2009

* The time most suitable for Yoga is in the morning before breakfast when the mind is calm and fresh and the movements can be done with ease and vitality.
*
The most important things you’ll need to get started – as they say – are a big heart and a small ego.
*
A person must seek a place of quietude, which is well ventilated, free from dust, insects, unpleasant smell, draught, and moisture. There should be no distraction whatsoever.
*
You must empty your bowels and bladder, clean your nostrils and throat of all mucus, consume a glass of lukewarm water and then begin the exercises after 15 minutes.
*
Always remember that you should begin with the easy postures and then proceed to the difficult ones. One must follow the graded steps of Yoga.
*
In the beginning, all movements should be practiced lightly and you must cease to go further if fatigue shows.
*
Yoga must pep up and not impart weariness and despondency.
*
Periods of relaxation are advisable if a particular exercise proves to be tiring.
*
Yoga trainers recommend a balanced diet (sattwik). There should be an interval of 4 hours between meals.
*
The ratio for the composition of meals should be:
+
grains and cereals 30% of the calorific value
+
dairy products 20%
+
vegetables and roots 25%
+
fruits and honey 20%
+
nuts remaining 5%
* Regarding the quantity of food, it should be moderate (mitahara), only that which satisfies one’s appetite.
* One should avoid overeating, fasting or eating once a day. Stale or non-nutritious food, you know, is harmful.
* The clothing should be loose and as scanty as possible, because maximum amount of the skin should be exposed to air.
* Form-fitting cotton/Lycra pants and shirts are the best.
* The breathing should be long and deep. The mouth should be closed and inhale and exhale only through the nose.
* Always take a mat of kusa or any other grass or hay for sitting postures.
* For lying postures use a woolen carpet, and spread a clean sheet over it.
* You can check out some other commercial Yoga accessories, like Yoga belt, foam blocks, Yoga pillows and rubber mats.
